Windows can get stuck for many reasons. Usually they have been painted shut or have dirty tracks or guides. These are simple to fix. Begin by taking a trowel and fitting it in the crack between the window stock and the window frame. Tap gently and wiggle the trowel in order to score the paint and free the window. Repeat around the sides and bottom of the window on the inside and out until the window is free. If it refuses to loosen hold a block of wood along the window sash and strike it several times with a hammer along all of the edges. If this doesn’t work then you might be dealing with a swollen window. This might be a job for a professional. If you do succeed in loosening the window, make sure to clean the running tracks and lubricate them with beeswax.
